Long-Term Care EHR-S Functional Profile Workgroup

[LTC Summit Home Page]

Welcome to the resource page for the Long Term Care - Nursing Home EHR system Functional Profile Workgroup.  This workgroup is a joint effort of participants from: two health information standards development organizations -- Health Level Seven (HL7) and the National Council of Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP); American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA); and the Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE).

The deliverables for this workgroup has the potential to greatly impact health information technology (HIT) in the long term care arena. The group will develop a LTC EHR-S functional profile (based on the HL7 EHR-S standard) that will provide the foundation for CCHIT to develop product certification criteria for nursing home EHRs.

Workgroup membership is open to all who are interested in and able to participate in the development of the LTC-NH EHR system functional profile standard.  The standards development process is open and consensus-driven.  (Click here for the Invitation Letter).

To participate in this workgroup, send your name and e-mail address to Nathan Lake at nlake@healthtech.net

About the Project and Workgroup:

In creating the certification criteria for nursing home EHR products, CCHIT will draw heavily on the requirements published in the 2007 HL7 EHR-System Functional Model (EHR-S FM) standard, as well as requirements that have yet to be developed for an HL7 EHR-System Functional Profile for nursing homes.

While the HL7 EHR-S FM provides a reference list of functions that may be present in an electronic health record system (EHR-S), the nursing home community needs to develop an LTC Functional Profile that specifies the subset of functions from the EHR-S FM that reflect the unique aspects and needs for EHR products in this long term care setting.  CCHIT will use the LTC-NH Functional Profile as a reference while they develop the functionality, interoperability, and security requirements that certified nursing home EHR systems must have to be certified.
